Did you know the BPU's Continuous Emissions Monitoring Systems (CEMS), monitors every pound of sulfur dioxide (SO2), oxides of nitrogen (NOx) and carbon dioxide (CO2) exiting the smoke stacks? In fact two separate systems monitor output levels for the coal fired boiler and the natural gas turbine.
Although the BPU no longer burns coal to generate electricity, the utility maintains the ability to use coal for generation. Therefore, the system to monitor emission levels for the coal boiler must be maintained.
These pollutants are reported to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) on a quarterly basis; huge fines are incurred for release of excess emissions.
