The City of Jamestown Board of Public Utilities (BPU) has an immediate opening for a Power System Electrician. The BPU is a full service utility provider serving residents and businesses in Jamestown, N.Y. and surrounding communities with electric, water, wastewater, solid waste and district heating/chilling services.

Applicants must have graduated from high school or posses a high school equivalency diploma and have two years full-time paid experience as a journey level electrician after completing a recognized or accepted apprentice or electricianís helper program or possession of a two year degree in electrical technology or a related field and completion of a recognized apprentice program, or seven years of full-time paid experience in electrical work of increasing complexity in residential, commercial, and industrial electrical applications at least two years of which is independent work as an electrician.

Persons in this position will perform journeyman level work associated with the installation and repair of a wide variety of electrical equipment used in the control and operation of steam power generating stations, gas turbine generators, and substations. Installs, troubleshoots and repairs power station control panel wiring and alarm systems for turbines, motors, relays, and a wide variety of similar remote controls. Assists in the maintenance of pneumatic and pressure sensitive relays and control devices; Maintains standby storage batteries and emergency generator used for emergency stations start-up power. Adjusts relays, intercommunication systems, starting devices, and other related large capacity electric generation A/C and D/C equipment; Installs, modifies and repairs station and substation control and building wiring, switchgear, transformers, etc.; Installs, modifies and repairs building wiring, motors, control, and other miscellaneous electrical equipment in BPU or municipal buildings; Performs remote control and relaying device installation, repair and maintenance in substations as required, and performs other duties as directed.

Thorough knowledge of the common practices, tools, terminology and materials associated with electrical work in power generating stations including gas turbine generators, and electrical substations, generators exciters and other electrical equipment, power plant metering instruments, relays and voltage regulating devices, direct current generation, conversion, circuits and control devices, common practices and safety precautions involved in working on or near rotating machinery and high voltage circuits. Also, good knowledge of the techniques associated with operating alternators in parallel and of capacitors and connections for power factor corrections; Ability to work from wiring diagrams and specifications good knowledge of the installation of high voltage motors, associated starting devices and controls; Good knowledge of battery maintenance and charging equipment, switchboard wiring for controlling generators; Good knowledge of electrical code requirements and approved installation methods; Ability to make simple tests and use instruments for locating trouble on electrical circuits; Ability to follow oral and written instructions; mechanical aptitude; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the job.
