The City of Jamestown Board of Public Utilities (BPU) has an immediate opening for a Power Plant Mechanic. The BPU is a full service utility provider serving residents and businesses in Jamestown, N.Y. and surrounding communities with electric, water, wastewater, solid waste and district heating/chilling services.
Applicants must have graduated from high school or possess a high school equivalency diploma; possess a two (2) year degree in Mechanical Technology and a minimum of three (3) years of practical experience performing mechanical repairs on the types of equipment in the Industrial or Power Industry Maintenance Field or, must have graduated from high school or possess a high school equivalency diploma and have five (5) years of practical experience performing mechanical repairs on the types of equipment in the Industrial or Power Industry Maintenance Field or an equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the limits noted above; possess good judgment skills, be dependable and have the ability to follow oral/written directions.
The Power Plant Mechanic will report directly to the Power Plant Supervisor. They will be responsible for performance of a variety of journeyman-level mechanical tasks associated with the trouble-shooting, repair and maintenance of heavy equipment used to generate thermal and electrical energy; repair and maintenance of natural gas powered equipment including but not limited to, hot water generators, combustion turbines, electric generators, heat exchangers, hydraulic systems, high pressure piping systems, air compressors, fans, controls; perform repairs on piping, valves, fittings for high pressure steam lines, high pressure pumps, air compressors, fans and other natural gas auxiliaries; and equipment associated with the firing and burning of fuel; perform repairs on steam turbine governors; prepare high pressure boilers for overall inspection; perform repairs on boiler fittings and replaces refractory material; and perform repairs to copper, brass and other metals associated with power station apparatus by soldering, brazing, and acetylene or electric arc welding on power plant equipment. . Work is performed under direct supervision of the Senior Power Plant Mechanic.
