Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator

The City of Jamestown Board of Public Utilities (BPU) has an immediate opening for a Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator. The BPU is a full service utility provider serving residents and businesses in Jamestown, N.Y. and surrounding communities with electric, water, wastewater, solid waste and district heating/chilling services.

Applicants must have graduated from high school or posses a high school equivalency diploma and possess an approved license as a Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator, issued by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation for the type of plant operated.

The person in this position will operate the wastewater treatment plant to assure the most efficient and economical use of equipment and manpower; operate pumps, motors, air compressors and related machinery and equipment; make daily inspections of plant and plant machinery; perform maintenance work and make minor repairs to machinery and equipment; make necessary tests for control of plant operation; record readings of meters, gauges, and scales; keep a log of plant operations and related records; maintain inventory of supplies, chemicals and equipment; prepare periodic reports on the operation of the plant; perform custodial duties in connection with maintenance of buildings and grounds; take samples of water and wastewater for testing; regulate and adjusts chlorinators and chemical feeders; wash filter beds and settling basins; conduct special studies for improvement of water quality and plant operations; treat and disposes of sludge; add chlorine and dechlor(sodium bisulfite) to wastewater; assists in the instruction of operator trainees; and may operate SCADA to monitor wastewater plant and water distribution system.

The position requires a thorough knowledge of practices used in the operation of water and wastewater treatment plants; good knowledge of the principles and application of physics, chemistry and bacteriology as they relate to the operation of modern water and wastewater treatment facilities; skill in the operation and repair of pumps, valves and related mechanical and electrical equipment; ability to read and understand and record data from gauges, scales and meters; ability to make routine laboratory and field tests for control of plant operation; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; mechanical aptitude; alertness and dependability; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
