UTILITY WORKER T&D (SCHEDULED)

The City of Jamestown Board of Public Utilities (BPU) has an immediate opening for a Utility Worker T&D. The BPU is a full service utility provider serving residents and businesses in Jamestown, N.Y. and surrounding communities with electric, water, wastewater, solid waste and district heating/chilling services.

Applicants must have graduated from high school or posses a high school equivalency diploma and have one (1) year of experience as an electrician's helper, telecommunications utility (performing related line construction work) or graduation from an apprentice lineworker or overhead lineworker program. Also they will be in possession, at time of appointment and during service in this classification, of a valid New York State Motor Vehicle Operator's license appropriate for the type of vehicles which the employee may operate.

Person in this position will flag traffic: assist in the running of service lines from transformers to homes and buildings; assist in the installation of cross arms and transformers; install the conductors and conduits for underground and overhead electrical service; assist in stringing electrical power lines on poles; assist in setting and erecting poles, digging holes and gain poles for electric power lines; supply line workers with materials, tools and equipment; may perform annual stray voltage tests on various electrical devices and equipment and verify distribution system records in mapping; mow grass, trim shrubs, rake leaves, trim and cut trees and perform landscaping; may perform labor for specific projects such as installing wire for telephone or data transmission (Fiber optic cable); operate automatic and power equipment and vehicles; make minor repairs to streets and sidewalks; perform minor maintenance on equipment as directed; collect and disposes of rubbish and perform general cleaning duties; operate a van, truck, snowplow, or other light automotive equipment; may move, retrieve and deliver records, files, books, bulk mail, supplies or equipment.; may perform minor electrical, plumbing and carpentry repairs on municipal buildings; may perform building cleaning tasks including the use of mechanized cleaning equipment; perform other duties as assigned.

Person in this position will also need a good working knowledge of rough carpentry, mechanical repair work, municipal power utility work, or other construction or maintenance trades; efficiency in the use of hand tools and machine tools; ability to perform semi-skilled manual tasks without constant supervision; ability to learn trade skills and methods; ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions; integrity; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
